## 5. Assembly of system equation

Since the behaviour of each element has been described in terms of its
behaviour at its edges, and in fact at certain discrete nodes along
its edges, the assembly of element matrices into a system matrix is
simply an expression of

- the fact that a node shared by two elements
must have the same displacement when considered as part of either
element; and of
- the assumption that the elements can only interact at
these discrete nodes.
