for a mechanical problem, and are functions of the spatial coördinates
\(\mathbf{x}\).

The value of \(n\) is chosen to be
as small as is consistent with the accuracy required of the
answer. The particular set of basis functions used is more or less
arbitrary, as long as they are independent and admissible.
