## 2. Rayleigh-Ritz procedure

This procedure was introduced by Ritz in 1908 and is a generalization
of a technique used by Rayleigh in 1877. It is the most common
procedure used for formulating finite-element approximations. The
following discussion is based on Stakgold (1968, pp. 332-335).
